GREENSBORO – Carolina Cobras announce rookie Anthony Ellis (6’1”, 245) will return to Greensboro for a second season.

Ellis was an explosive rookie for the Cobras defense. During his 8 games in Carolina, Ellis had a total of 18.5 tackles (16 solo and 5 ast), totaled 3 fumble returns for 3 touchdowns, 7 tackles for loss (5 regular season, 2 postseason), 6.5 sacks (4.5 regular season, 2 postseason). Ellis finished the season leading the league in fumbles recovered (4).

Even though Ellis joined the Cobras late in the season, Coach Back is looking forward to having him back on the roster, “When Anthony moved to the Mac Backer position our defense changed, our pressure got better and we shut down any and all run games. He brings explosive power and the smarts to the defense, not only to the LB spot but to the defensive line. Getting Ellis back is a big big plus.”

Prior to signing with the Cobras, Ellis was also a stand out during his collegiate career with Charleston Southern University. As a 3 year starter, he totaled for 156 tackles, 24.5 sacks, and 52 tackles for loss. Ellis was named the Defensive MVP at the Tropical Bowl his senior year, named First Team All-American by HERO Sports and garnered Second Team honors by the AFCA, STATS FCS and the Associated Press. He was also recognized as the co-Defensive Player of the Year for the Big South, becoming the fourth repeat winner of the league’s top defensive honor. In 2015, Ellis was 15th in the NCAA in tackles for loss per game.

Anthony Ellis is a native of Apopka, Florida where he was named the No. 15 prospect in the Orlando Super 60 and First Team All-Central Florida as a senior. During his senior year, Ellis had 40 tackles for loss to pair with 73 tackles (54 solo), five sacks, and four fumble recoveries.
